【摘要】:ThegradationofthesoilisusedforclassificationinaccordancewithPracticeD2487.Thegradation(particle-sizedistribution)curveisusedtocalculatethecoefficientofuniformityandthecoefficientofcurvature.Selectionandacceptanceoffillmaterialsareoftenbasedongradation.Forexample,highwayembankments,backfills,andearthendamsmayhavegradationrequirements.Thegradationofthesoiloftencontrolsthedesignandqualitycontrolofdrainagefilters,andground-waterdrainage.Selectionofoptionsfordynamiccompactionandgroutingisrelatedtogradationofthesoil.Thegradationofasoilisanindicatorofengineeringproperties.Hydraulicconductivity,compressibility,andshearstrengtharerelatedtothegradationofthesoil.However,engineeringbehaviorisdependentuponmanyfactors(suchaseffectivestress,stresshistory,mineraltype,structure,plasticity,andgeologicorigins)andcannotbebasedsolelyupongradation.Note18212;Thequalityoftheresultproducedbythesetestmethodsisdependentonthecompetenceofthepersonnelperformingit,andthesuitabilityoftheequipmentandfacilitiesused.AgenciesthatmeetthecriteriaofPracticeD3740aregenerallyconsideredcapableofcompetentandobjectivetesting/sampling/inspection/etc.UsersofthesetestmethodsarecautionedthatcompliancewithPracticeD3740doesnotinitselfassurereliableresults.Reliableresultsdependonmanyfactors;PracticeD3740providesameansofevaluatingsomeofthosefactors.1.1Soilsconsistofparticleswithvariousshapesandsizes.Thistestmethodisusedtoseparateparticlesintosizerangesandtodeterminequantitativelythemassofparticlesineachrange.Thesedataarecombinedtodeterminetheparticle-sizedistribution(gradation).Thistestmethodusesasquareopeningsievecriterionindeterminingthegradationofsoilbetweenthe3-in.(75-mm)andNo.200(75-x00B5;m)sieves.1.2Theterms,soilsandmaterial,areusedinterchangeablythroughoutthestandard.1.3Incaseswherethegradationofparticleslargerthan3in.(75mm)sieveisrequired,TestMethodD5519maybeused.1.4IncaseswherethegradationofparticlessmallerthanNo.200(75-x00B5;m)sieveisrequired,TestMethodD422maybeused.1.5Typically,ifthemaximumparticlesizeisequaltoorlessthan4.75mm(No.4sieve),thensingle-setsievingisapplicable.Furthermore,ifthemaximumparticlesizeisgreaterthan4.75mm(No.4sieve)andequaltoorlessthan9.5mm(3/8-insieve),theneithersingle-setsievingorcompositesievingisapplicable.Finally,ifthemaximumparticlesizeisequaltoorgreaterthan19.0mm(3/4-insieve),compositesievingisapplicable.Forspecialconditionssee10.3.1.6Twotestmethodsareprovidedinthisstandard.Themethodsdifferinthesignificantdigitsrecordedandthesizeofthespecimen(mass)required.Themethodtobeusedmaybespecifiedbytherequestingauthority;otherwiseMethodAshallbeperformed.1.6.1MethodA8212;Thepercentage(bymass)passingeachsievesizeisrecordedtothenearest1%.Thismethodmustbeusedwhenperformingcompositesieving.Forcasesofdisputes,MethodAistherefereemethod.1.6.2MethodB8212;Thepercentage(bymass)passingeachsievesizeisrecorded......
